The Gateway Society of Hazardous Materials Managers (GSHMM) was established in 1990 to provide a forum in the Saint Louis bi-state region for environmental, health, and safety regulations governing hazardous materials and wastes; and to establish a network of multidisciplined professionals in the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) fields. GSHMM is the local affiliate of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (ACHMM).

GSHMM provides opportunities for EHS professionals to advance in their respective fields, while developing and maintaining knowledge of other regulatory issues that may affect them; and to guide EHS professionals in the pursuit of the nationally recognized Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credential that is managed by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Managers (IHMM).

GSHMM has grown to over 160 certified and affiliate members. We are a strong network of highly qualified professionals drawing on one another’s expertise to resolve problems and clarify uncertainties associated with environmental, health, and safety issues confronting our industries and the community in which we all live.

Members meet monthly to hear experts discuss topics of current interest. In the past, we have had professionals from St. Louis City, MDNR, IEPA, USEPA, USDOT, OSHA, attorneys, consultants, and industry speak on key topics in the areas of environmental, safety & health, environmental policy and regulatory compliance, environmental science and technology, hazardous materials handling, emergency response, transportation and site remediation. GSHMM conducts a 3-day CHMM review course hosted by St. Louis University to help aspirants prepare for the certification exam.

To reach out to the business community, GSHMM conducts an annual Spring Seminar on regulatory issues, with particular emphasis on the issues that may impact small businesses.
