GSHMM
was founded in 1990 as an affiliate of the 8,000-member Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers. In 1993, the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers officially recognized
this affiliation.
Members meet monthly to hear experts discuss topics of current
interest. In the past, we have had professionals from St.
Louis City HazMat Response, MDNR, IEPA, USEPA, OSHA, consultants,
and attorneys speak on key topics in the areas of Environmental
Safety & Health, environmental regulatory compliance and
policy, environmental science and technology, hazardous materials
handling, emergency response, and site remediation.
The GSHMM also conducts a 3-day CHMM review course offered
through St. Louis University to help aspirants qualify for
the certification exam. To reach out to the business community,
the GSHMM conducts an annual seminar on regulatory issues,
with particular emphasis on the issues that may impact small
businesses.
Besides the monthly meetings and conferences, members have
opportunities to become involved with the local chapter through
serving on standing or special committees, on the Board of
Directors, or as a Chapter Officer. We have several active
committees including: membership, meetings, awards and outreach/communications.
As the committees are the active portion of the chapter, the
more participation we have, the more can be accomplished towards
our Chapters goals.
We elect officers from our membership for one-year terms.
These officers must be accredited CHMMs to serve in the positions
of President, President-Elect, Treasurer, Secretary, and members
of the Board of Directors. By the election process, we ensure
that our officers serve the Gateway community, and are responsive
to our needs.
